It really has been a good year for Huawei, with the company managing to secure the top spot in the global foldable smartphone market during the first quarter of 2024. This, however, is the opposite of what Samsung has been facing after its foldable shipments experienced a -42% decrease.
This follows an earlier prediction about Huawei overtaking Samsung in the foldable market. According to a DSCC report in March, saying that the Chinese company would be able to secure over 40% of the foldable market share in the first half of 2024. According to the firm, this will be possible through the help of the brand’s recent releases of Mate X5 and Pocket 2.
Despite not reaching the said figure in a recent report from Counterpoint Research, owning 35% of the foldable market in Q1 of 2024 is still a huge success for Huawei. To recall, Huawei is still facing a ban from the US and other countries, and dethroning the former king of the foldable market, Samsung, during these times is a milestone for the company.
According to Counterpoint, the company had a 257% YoY shipment growth in 2024 during the first quarter. Interestingly, Huawei is not the only Chinese smartphone company that managed to grow its foldable shipment volumes. According to the firm, Motorola (1,473%) and Honor (460%) also have increases in their shipments, translating to 11% and 12% in market share during the first quarter of 2024.
