According to a new report, Samsung could make a comeback in the second quarter of 2024 in the foldable smartphone arena. Interestingly, despite this, Chinese brand Huawei is expected to retain its dominance in the sell-in basis of the foldable market.
That’s according to the latest report from Display Supply Chain Consultants (DSCC), which provides analyses within the display supply chain. The report follows the firm’s earlier prediction that Huawei would dethrone Samsung in the foldable market in Q1 2024. Later, the forecast turned into reality, with Huawei securing 35% of the foldable market during the said period.
Now, DSCC claimed that the tables will turn in the next quarter, with the odds turning to Samsung’s side. In line with this, the report shared that there will be growth in the foldable panel procurement during the period.
“While Q1’24 was a seasonally slow quarter for the foldable market, Q2’24 is projected to establish a new record high for foldable smartphone panel procurement at 9.25M as Samsung Display starts panel shipments for its latest Z Flip and Z Fold models one month earlier than last year, in April rather than May, and Huawei’s panel procurement continues to grow,” the report reads. “In Q2’24, Samsung is expected to hold a 52% to 27% advantage over Huawei in panel procurement with the upcoming Z Flip 6 and Z Fold 6 the two highest volume models on a panel procurement basis. Huawei will have the #3, #4 and #6 models on a panel procurement basis. There is expected to be panel procurement for 27 different models in Q2’24.”
Despite this, DSCC underscored that Huawei will maintain its dominance in terms of the sell-in basis in the foldable market. According to reports, the brand will announce the foldable Mate X6 device in the second half of 2024 alongside the Mate 70 series, the successor of the famous Mate 60 that the brand launched in China last year.
