New database discoveries show that Google will finally choose a different company to produce the Tensor G5 of its Pixel 10 series.
The news came amid anticipation for the upcoming Pixel 9 series and the recent release of the search giant’s Pixel 8a model. It should excite Pixel fans, as, despite the decent performance of the current Tensor in Pixels, improvements in the chips are undeniably needed.
According to the trade databases unearthed by Android Authority, Google will finally move away from Samsung in the production of Tensor chips in Pixel 10. To recall, Samsung Foundry started working for Google in 2021 to produce the first generation of the chip. The partnership benefitted Google by allowing it to get the chips it needed faster, but the chips’ performance couldn’t match the other creations in the market.
Nonetheless, according to the data discovered, TSMC will start working for Google, starting with Pixel 10. The series will be armed with the Tensor G5, which was confirmed to be called “Laguna Beach” internally. In the Tensor G5 sample chip shipping manifest, various details about the chip were revealed, including the name of the company that will produce it: TSMC.
Despite this, the details show that Samsung (specifically Samsung Electronics Co.) will remain the producer of the chip’s package-on-package 16GB RAM. This complements earlier leaks about the Pixel 9 Pro, which reportedly will be armed with improved 16GB RAM.
Ultimately, the report highlights that Google’s early move to start working on the Pixel 10’s chip, even if it still has to release the Pixel 9 lineup, is logical. Given that the change will require the company to ensure the efficiency of the new platform, it will have to take some time to prepare it. According to the report, the company is now working with India’s Tessolve Semiconductor to offload some of the work that used to be handled by Samsung.
