With Xiaomi 12S Ultra, Xiaomi made a breakthrough by using Sony’s 1-inch IMX 989 camera sensor for the first time. Since the amount of light captured increases with camera sensor size, bigger the sensor size, better the photos. While that’s not the only case, it’s good to have large sensors in phone cameras.
Xiaomi today shared the images of 12S Ultra with a camera focused concept. This phone, which is not yet open for sale, supports Leica-M type lenses, which means you will be able to mount Leica’s camera lenses into a phone. Here’s an image of Xiaomi 12S Ultra and a camera side by side.
The concept smartphone has not just one, but two 1-inch sensors. Previous Xiaomi 12S Ulta has one 1″ sensor on main camera and all the other sensors are smaller than 1″. Sapphire glass that is scratch-resistant on the camera module to protect against scratches while attaching or removing lenses on Xiaomi 12S Ultra.
The lens has variable aperture of f/1.4 – f/16. Xiaomi 12S Ultra can capture 10 bit RAW images and shoot videos with Leica-M lenses. Here are some photos of Xiaomi 12S Ultra with Leica lens mounted.
Although we are unsure if this phone will be sold or not, it is excellent that Xiaomi has thought of such an idea. This phone might take the place of compact cameras if they make the concept well. Xiaomi also published images that were captured using a Leica lens and 12S Ultra.
