Xiaomi is continuously releasing HyperOS to its users around the globe. The new system brings a boatful of new features and system improvements, but some users might find a few of them unnecessary. That includes the deactivation of the shortcut icon texts in the notification area.
HyperOS replaces the MIUI operating system and is based on the Android Open Source Project and Xiaomi’s Vela IoT platform. The update will be provided to certain models of Xiaomi, Redmi, and Poco smartphones, with the company hoping “to unify all ecosystem devices into a single, integrated system framework.” This should allow seamless connectivity across all Xiaomi, Redmi, and Poco devices, such as smartphones, smart TVs, smartwatches, speakers, cars (in China for now), and more. Aside from that, the company has promised AI enhancements, faster boot and app launch times, enhanced privacy features, and a simplified user interface while using less storage space.
Sadly, the update is far from perfect. One of the common issues HyperOS users are experiencing now is the sudden change in the control center of the system. Prior to the update, the area used to have a label on each icon for easy identification of their function. However, in an attempt to focus on the aesthetic of the system, Xiaomi has decided to deactivate the text by default in HyperOS. While the move might sound insignificant to some, some users find the change problematic when identifying the icon functions.
Thankfully, you can easily change it back if you already have the HyperOS update on your device. Just do the following steps below:
- Launch the Settings app on your device.
- Go to “Notifications and status bar.”
- Find the “Don’t show icon labels” option and deactivate it.
Note: Activating the text in the control center will hide some of the icons, so you’ll have to scroll to see them all. If you want to prevent this, try to reduce the number of unnecessary icons in the area.
